In the week, a sell call was issued for all the momentum stocks. VMWare (VMW), Splunk (SPLK), and RackSpace (RAX) will likely underperform the market. Valuations are deeply unfavorable for these technology firms. Customers cut back spending in the last quarter. Business will eventually improve, but not in the next quarter or two. 2016 will bring uncertainty for these firms. VMWare is fundamentally riskier than ever. When Dell bought EMC, EMC set unfavorable conditions that would harm VMWare shareholders. I ranked a stock I personally hold, Nokia (NOK), a stock to avoid for now. The company will report quarterly results, at which point there will be more clarity for its network business in China. December 2015’s call to avoid Valeant (VRX) when it was over $90 is finally starting to pay off. ROI is still -27%, but it will break even as investors shy away from the generics drug seller.
In the micro-cap segment, being bullish on IP holder Wilan (WILN) paid off. The long-term short idea for avoiding MobileIron (MOBL) is playing out. BlackBerry (BBRY) just needs to do its part: sell more Android phones profitably, grow MDM software sales in the double digit, and take MOBL’s business.
