Image Source: PixabayAfter yesterday’s lethargic sideways move, where traders sat on the sidelines waiting for the outcome of the triple main event of the past 24 hours, the presidential debate result, the CPI report and NVDA’s presentation, the Wednesday market did not disappoint and there were both emotional lows and more recently highs. The action over the past 24 hours can be roughly divided into three sections: i) the debate and its aftermath; ii) the CPI print and its immediate aftermath, and iii) comments from NVDA CEO Jensen Huang. And visuallyStarting at the top, the debate – which was really a 1-on-3 with Trump tak...

depositphotosLet me start with the punch line, which I think will not be a very common take: this report does not stop the Fed from easing 50bps next week, and honestly, it doesn’t really even hurt the chances very much. The inflation swaps market was pricing in 0.05% on an NSA basis, roughly 0.13% on a SA basis. Actually, that market was better offered, with traders either expecting a weaker number or wanting to hedge that possibility more than the chance of a stronger number. Economists gathered around a consensus of 0.16% for headline, and 0.20% on core CPI. The actual print was +0.19% m/m on CPI, and +0.28% on core CPI, bringing the y/y ...
TM Editors’ note: This article discusses a penny stock and/or microcap. Such stocks are easily manipulated; do your own careful due diligence.Image Source: PixabayNearly a year ago, Safety Net gave healthcare communications company Spok Holdings (SPOK), which is pronounced “spoke,” an “F” for dividend safety – mostly because of plummeting free cash flow between 2019 and 2022.Additionally, after a 150% dividend increase in 2022, the company’s payout ratio was over 900%! That means it was paying an astonishing $9 in dividends for every $1 in free cash flow. That’s as unsustainable as it gets.Let’s see whether Spok has...
Image Source: PixabayThe big question of the week is 25 or 50? No, we’re not talking about the age of Leonardo DiCaprio’s next girlfriend (obviously 25). We don’t have time to think about about girlfriends (or boyfriends) because we’re too busy thinking about Federal Reserve policy and whether they’ll go 25bps or 50bps at the next FOMC meeting. As I’ve noted in the past I think they should have cut in July and I think they actually regret having not cut in July so there’s a pretty reasonable argument that they should cut 50bps just to make up for the mistake. That’s what I would do if I were Supreme Leader of the Fed and I’d...
Image Source: PexelsI expected rent and OER to moderate. They didn’t. The CPI rose 0.2 percent month-over-month but fell to 2.5 percent year-over-year.The BLS reports the CPI Rose 0.2 Percent in August.Had shelter cooperated, the gain would have been much lower, which is what I expected. However, rent and owners’ equivalent rent (OER) rose 0.4 percent and 0.5 percent respectively. OER is the price of rent someone who owns a home would pay if instead they rented their own home.Other than shelter, this was a very tame report. But shelter is over a third of the index.CPI Month-Over-Month Details The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consum...
Image Source: DepositPhotos Kimberly-Clark Corporation (KMB – Free Report) experienced a notable increase in its stock price, registering a 20.3% year-to-date increase. This impressive growth surpasses the Zacks Consumer Products – Staples industry’s increase of 4.2%.Kimberly-Clark’s success is mainly due to its strategic shift towards a volume-and-mix growth model. This approach, which leverages advanced technologies and innovative products, aims to boost operational efficiency. By focusing on supply chain integration and divesting from non-core markets, the company streamlined its operations. In addition, KMB...
Image source: DepositPhotos Yield Curve Inversion (short-term rates higher than long-term rates) is not a perfect recession predictor! In fact, over the past 25 years, yield curve inversions have correctly predicted recession twice and been wrong twice. The treasury yield curve is now inverted on the short-end (i.e. 3-month bill 5.13% and 10-year 3.72%) but un-inverted on the longer end (i.e. 2-year 3.66% and 10-year 3.72%). The QE that began in 2008 has distorted the predictive power of the yield curve. Therefore, at this point, we have to watch the data and wait and see if a recession comes. DepositPhotos Donald Trump seems to get very confused when talking about economics. The U.S. did have respectable growth under his administration, but it was not especially good by any standard metric. We also were very far from being the fastest growing economy in the world.Contrary to what Trump seems to believe, China’s economic growth hugely outpaced U.S. growth under his watch. China’s economy grew by a cumulative total of 25.4 percent in the years from 2017 to 2021, compared to just 9.3 percent for the United States. Source: International Monetary Fund.
