One popular approach to investing based on Benjamin Graham’s methods is to use the so-called “Graham Number.” There are some important differences between the Graham Number and the Graham Formula, but using the Graham Number is definitely useful even if the investor only uses it as a screening tactic. I’ve selected the best companies reviewed by ModernGraham which trade below their Graham Number. The companies selected all are found suitable for the Defensive Investor and/or the Enterprising Investor, and have been valued as undervalued based on the ModernGraham valuation model. Further, the overall screen found 51 companies meeting...
The Chinese central bank has managed to instill some order in both onshore and offshore RMB markets, but at what cost? The amount of intervention that was induced severely strains only the future at those maturities. Central banks are nothing if not short-termists in the purest sense, so repeating what doesn’t work never factors; all that matters is right now. In that sense, the PBOC has re-pegged the CNY exchange rate which has had the added effect of generating more placidity in yuan money markets. CNH money rates which had skyrocketed at the outset of the attempt have been brought under control at least at the shortest maturities. Furthe...

GBPJPY: Having rallied to take back its Monday losses on Tuesday, GBPJPY looks to strengthen more on bull pressure. On the downside, support comes in at the 169.00 level where a violation will aim at the 168.00 level. A break below here will target the 167.00 level followed by the 166.00 level. Its daily RSI is bullish and pointing higher suggesting further strength. Conversely, resistance is seen at the 171.00 level followed by the 172.00 level. A cut through that level will set the stage for a move further higher towards the 173.00 level. Further out, resistance resides at the 174.00 level. All in all, GBPJPY looks to strengthen more on bul...
It was the bearst of times. It was the worst of times. Heh. OK. Now that we got that out of the way……… Anyway, my portfolio is presently 70% in shorts (70 of them, in fact) and 30% in cash. I am thus “cautiously pessimistic” about the market, in spite of Yellen and Kuroda coming up this week (the AAPL risk has passed, as the stock seems to be simply leaking a little bit lower and is most definitely not inspiring folks about the wonderful earnings season). My shorts are, by definition charts that I think have topped out and are prone to fall. In spite of the heavy selling (which ended, for now, last Wednesday), there are still many...
The Chart of the Day belongs to NiSource (NYSE:NI). I found the electric and natural gas utility stock by using Barchart to sort the 52 week high list first for the highest technical buy signals, then I used the FlipChart feature to review the charts. Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 12/29 the stock gained 2.63%. NiSource Inc. is one of the largest fully-regulated utility companies in the United States, serving approximately 3.5 million natural gas customers and 500,000 electric customers across seven states through its local Columbia Gas and NIPSCO brands. Based in Merrillville, Indiana, NiSource’s more than 7,000 employ...
Earnings growth for the S&P 500 index is on track for another decline in the ongoing Q4 earnings season, the third back-to-back quarter of negative earnings growth. The earnings recession isn’t expected to end any time soon as the picture for the current and coming quarters isn’t showing much improvement either. In terms of the Q4 scorecard, we now have results from 92 S&P 500 members that combined account for 24.8% of the index’s total market capitalization. Total earnings for these 92 index members are down -1.4% from the same period last year on -1.8% lower revenues, with 73.9% beating EPS estimates and 45.7% beating rev...
We wrote in our 2016 Outlook Report that we favor stocks above commodities and currencies in 2016, but that increased market volatility should be taken seriously. Volatility also implies opportunities. We identified the following key success factors for investors in 2016: Patience: wait for a correction to take place, i.e. wait for a limited number of windows throughout the year to take positions (entry and exit). Precision: the timeslot to take positions will be limited, so picking the right timing will be key, but simultaneously the number of winning stocks will be restricted, so stock picking will be key. Perseverance: dedication to resear...
An Apple A Day Apple (AAPL) is due to report earnings after the bell Tuesday. Wall Street is known for lowering expectations prior to earnings in order to paint a more favorable picture of the actual results. Investors will have the hard numbers in hand in a few hours. From MarketWatch: Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect Apple to just barely set a new iPhone sales record of 75 million, though that would mark a year-over-year improvement of just one million, versus much higher growth rates in the past. Morgan Stanley told investors in a note on Tuesday that they should brace for the first year-over-year sales decline for the iPhone since its...
Looks like something big is about to take place on the Comex as Registered Gold inventories declined a whopping 73% in one day. This is a very suprising update as Comex Gold inventories haven’t experienced much movement over the past few months. Well, this all changed today as a stunning 201,345 oz (73%) of the total 275,325 oz of Registered Gold was transferred to the Eligible Category today: As we can see, 21,200 oz was transferred from Brinks Registered Inventories, 84,881 transferred from HSBC and 95,269 from Scotia Mocatta. There are only 73,980 oz of Registered Gold remaining in the Comex inventories: This is the lowest level of R...
