Sentiment hit a number of bearish extremes last week and I tweeted out a few charts illustrating this shift in the mood of market participants. The most striking of these was the percentage of Bulls in the AAII (American Association of Individual Investors) poll dropping down to 17.9%, below the extreme low it reached in March 2009 (18.9%) after a 57% decline in the S&P 500. The immediate response on twitter was predictable: 1) subjective opinions that there was not “enough fear” yet, 2) that the fear was more than justified because of xyz bad news (imminent recession, china, crashing oil, etc.), and 3) the times in history when sen...
The Chart of the Day belongs to Spark Energy (Nasdaq:SPKE). I found the electric utility stock by using Barchart to sort the Russell 3000 Indexstocks first for the highest technical buy signals, then I used the Flipchart feature to review the charts. Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 12/7 the stock gained 33.76%. Spark Energy, Inc. is an independent retail energy services company. Photo Credit: Michael Kappel Even with global volatility, the automotive industry is enjoying considerable gains and profitability while annual sales have reached pre-recession levels. Last year, drivers in the U.S. bought more cars than ever before, a remarkable turnaround for an industry on the verge of collapse 5 years ago. The historic free fall in oil prices have fueled car sales with consumers flocking towards gas guzzling SUV’s and trucks. The most immediate challenges that threaten the automotive sales are currency headwinds and wavering demand in emerging markets. From a manufacturing standpoint, the auto industry must evolve with...
With oil trading at the lowest prices in a generation, an increasing number of commentators are beginning to describe the commodity as one that offers ‘deep value’. While oil is certainly trading at a deep discount to its long term average price, and may very well regress back towards this average with higher prices, there is simply no way that it can accurately be described as offering deep value in the traditional sense of this phrase. Let’s take a look at what happens when we try to apply the conceptual framework of deep value to oil and other natural resources. Understanding Deep Value Deep value is a methodology of buying something...
Today Incyte Corporation (INCY) decided to terminate a phase 2 study for Colorectal cancer, as an interim analysis concluded that the study didn’t see enough efficacy in the combination to continue the study. The phase 2 study that was terminated was known as INCB 18424-267. The company chose to terminate the sub study after determining that efficacy was not being produced. Patients in the sub study took Ruxolitinib, marketed under the name Jakafi, together with regorafenib — placebo — and were not able to improve upon their symptoms. The sub study that failed to show significant results was in the Colorectal patients that...
This may prove a challenging year for small-cap biotechs, but the five analysts who selected companies for inclusion on The Life Sciences Report’s 2016 Small-Cap Biotech Watchlist believe these companies have a good shot at producing innovative products in a variety of indications and producing value for investors. Discovery, it turns out, is not just about finding the cure for a particular disease; it’s also about finding the companies best poised to reach that goal. The panelists who selected the 2016 Small-Cap Biotech Watchlist are George Zavoico of JonesTrading International Services, Mara Goldstein of Cantor Fitzgerald, Ren...
“If we lived in a state where virtue was profitable, common sense would make us saintly. But since we see that abhorrence, anger, pride, and stupidity commonly profit far beyond charity, modesty, justice, and thought, perhaps we must stand fast a little – even at the risk of being heroes.” Robert Bolt, A Man For All Seasons “He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.” Samuel Johnson Gold continued to push higher today after some early weakness. Interestingly enough the dollar has shown some weakness, but the overall flavor of the markets has the tang of a repricing in of risks that have...
The back and forth in the markets continued as yesterday’s gains were undone by today’s higher volume selling. The concern with today’s action is that the consolidation in the S&P has the look of a bearish continuation wedge. And given the potential for a measured move, it opens up the possibility for a push down to 1,650s. A weak ‘buy’ signal in the MACD could trap more bulls. The Nasdaq accelerated its relative performance down (against the S&P). Today’s 2%+ loss pushed prices back to last Wednesday’s trading range. Additional losses will push into the spike low. The ‘Golden Cross...
