Everyone following markets wants to see order, even if the data present only chaos. Humans reject random data, imposing explanations instead. They see patterns that reflect normal probabilities. They look at zillions of cases and celebrate a single instance that confirms a preconception. Because behavioral economics has been so widely celebrated, Nobel Prizes awarded, and proponents publicized, it seems like we should have learned something. Not so! People are schooled to buy when others are fearful, but it is easier said than done.Similarly, and despite the warnings, it is easy to fall into the trap of imposing order on chaos.Larry Sessions ...
In the third quarter 10-Q from Capital One, the bank notes a rather large change in funding. At the start of the year, Capital One had drawn $17.72 billion in advances from the Federal Home Loans Banks (which of the twelve isn’t stated and it is likely there were funding agreements with several). The FHLB system allows banks to pledge collateral in order to receive these advances as one subsidized method of funding bank assets, primarily residential or commercial mortgage loans. That balance was safely less than the overall standby borrowing capacity for Capital One of $29.5 billion. By the end of Q3, however, the bank had repaid some $13 b...

Internet major Yahoo Inc. (YHOO – Analyst Report) reported Q4 earnings after the bell on Tuesday, and results look to have come in a bit better than expected, at least on the top line. However, this is one company that’s got much bigger fish to fry in the near-term, and analysts appear to be scrambling to make sense of it. Yahoo’s board explained that it will continue to pursue its “reverse spin” arrangement — whereby, instead of selling off its holdings in Chinese search giant Alibaba [(BABA – Analyst Report)], it will spin off Yahoo shares instead — while at the same time consider strategi...
Video length: 00:01:56 The employment picture comes into focus out of America on Wednesday as we get the ADP Non-farm Employment Change numbers. That being the case, we get an idea of what we could be getting ready to see on Friday, which of course will move the markets in general. Because of this, the better the number, the better the stock markets in the United States should react. On top of that, we also have the ISM Non-manufacturing PMI numbers coming out, which of course will also give a boost to the stock market if we are receiving decent numbers. WTI Crude Oil continues to look soft, and any rally at this point in time will more t...
Alphabet (Nasdaq: GOOGL) the new holding company for Google reported after the bell on Tuesday. The company crushed both bottom and top line expectations by beating earnings per share estimates by 58 cents a share on better than a 17% increase in revenues. The stock has even overtaken mighty Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) to become the biggest public company by market capitalization. Although its valuation is a bit higher than I usually like to pay for large cap growth stocks, the recent changes the company has made are likely to pay off in long-term capital appreciation for its shareholders. Given the current anemic global environment, this growth ...
Shares of Synthetic Biologics (SYN) fell by 14% yesterday after the company reported on update on the phase 2 clinical trial for its Trimesta drug, used to treat patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis — RRMS. In RRMS, patients suffer from devastating attacks on the myelin sheath – the membrane that surrounds nerve cells. These patients relapse in that their disease is not constant, instead it is followed by on/off periods that occur randomly. Back in November of 2015, the company announced that it wanted to include independent third-party evaluations to determine if the Trimesta program should be continued into fur...

Where is the Growth Potential in Large Cap Biopharmaceutical Companies? Caution: Risk Aversion Remains High Investing in biotech stocks ain’t getting easier. The sector is underperforming the market by 16% YTD, sentiment has been burned by concerns about drug pricing and even the spectre of a Fed rate rise, with potentially less available equity funding, has hit all stocks. To beat the market in 2016 you need to select specific stocks that have value, dividends and a near term pipeline. The objective here is to select 3-4 large cap biopharmaceutical stocks that can beat the IBB. Now that the speculative fever has subsided large caps can p...
Like Bill Murray it feels like a bad Groundhog’s Day again as markets moved right back down in volatile, what I believe, is a descending spiral. For bulls, just when you think markets are ready for a big time rally, (nearly 400 points higher just last Friday), bears moved back in taking charge once again. I further projected on just last week Thursday we could expect a counter trend rally in the S&P from 1902 to 1956. We hit 1940 on Friday and have fallen once again to close at 1904. There wasn’t much in the way of economic data on Turnaround Tuesday but the focus remained on crude oil (down) and China (down). Crude oil fell sharply o...
