Advertising in the modern age is an extremely difficult task with all the clutter and noise. If you hadn’t noticed, it leaves many products experimenting with packaging in order to sell “new and improved.” The “easy pour spout”, for instance, became commonplace as if the old manner of detergent weren’t easy or comfortable to begin with. I seriously doubt that any single person ever failed to buy a product because they thought to themselves that it was difficult to get out. That was never the point, of course, as all the company wants to accomplish is to advertise “new and improved” regardless of whether you think it is either ...
The shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) are falling after the company last night reported lower than expected revenue and divulged that its same-store sales had plunged more than 14% last quarter. However, a number of firms responded positively following the report, with Wells Fargo upgrading the stock and Piper Jaffray recommending that patient investors buy the shares. Conversely, Deutsche Bank and Jefferies continue to express caution about the company’s outlook. WHAT’S NEW: Chipotle reported Q4 EPS of $2.17, versus the consensus outlook of $1.86. However, the company’s revenue came in slightly below expectations and i...
Note: The charts below have been updated to include yesterday’s preliminary report on U.S. Light Vehicle sales. For the past few years we’ve been following a couple of transportation metrics: Vehicle Miles Traveled and Gasoline Volume Sales. For both series we focus on the population adjusted data. Let’s now do something similar with the Light Vehicle Sales report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. This data series stretches back to January 1976. Since that first data point, the Civilian Noninstitutional Population Age 16 and Over (i.e., driving age not in the military or an inmate) has risen 62.8%. Here is a chart, ...
The news on Friday that the Bank of Japan had joined the ECB in pushing policy rates negative was absorbed with brilliant enthusiasm on Wall Street. At least, much of the attribution for the exceptional rally was given to the BoJ’s move. I find it implausible, arguably silly, to think that a marginal change in monetary policy by a desperate central bank on the other side of the world – however unexpected – would have a massive effect on US stocks. Subsequent trading, which has reversed almost all of that ebullience in two days, suggests that other investors also may agree that just maybe the sorry state of earnings growth rates in thi...
There are a number of great companies in the market today. I’ve selected the highest dividend yields among the undervalued companies for defensive dividend stock investors reviewed by ModernGraham. Each company has been determined to be suitable for the Defensive Investor according to the ModernGraham approach. Defensive Investors are defined as investors who are not able or willing to do substantial research into individual investments, and therefore need to select only the companies that present the least amount of risk. Enterprising Investors, on the other hand, are able to do substantial research and can select companies that pre...

ADP reported non-farm private jobs growth at 205,000. The rolling averages of year-over-year jobs growth rate remains strong but the rate of growth continues in a downtrend (although insignificant again this month). The market expected 160,000 to 219,000 (consensus 190,000) versus the 205,000 reported. These numbers are all seasonally adjusted; In Econintersect‘s January 2016 economic forecast released in late December, we estimated non-farm private payroll growth at 110,000 (based on economic potential) and 170,000 (fudged based on current overrun of economic potential); This month, ADP’s analysis is that small and medium sized ...
Much more than CPI inflation needs to be considered with respect to the gold price Yes folks, it’s the return of the two eggheads (Campbell Harvey and Claude Erb) who first put the scare into gold bugs back in 2013 with the research paper The Golden Dilemma (PDF), which found that as adjusted for CPI, gold was very overvalued. Enter Mark Hulbert with the updated warning for inflation-centric gold bugs. Gold has no business being this expensive. I have never understood who would want to be one of these “gold traders” (other than the miners with a need to hedge and bullion banks with a need to hedge and manipulate, ha ha ha). Wh...
With the dollar tumbling and Dudley and Kuroda exposed as impotent, investors are rotating to the safety of not Biotechs but Bullion and Bonds. Gold just pushed above $1135 to 3-month highs, breaking above its crucial 200-day moving-average… But will this break hold? ...
