Those looking for clear recession signals in Canada and Australia have them. Portions of the Canadian and Australian yield curves are now inverted. Canada has been in a state of inversion for at least four weeks. Canadian Yield Curve In Canada, the entire t-Bill portion of the curve from 1-month to 1-year is inverted with 2-year bonds. Reader Gary pinged me with the above chart from the Financial Post. Australia Inversion I did a quick check on Australia. Here are the numbers from Investing.Com. 1-Year: 1.913% 2-Year: 1.782% 3-Year: 1.749% 5-Year: 1.971% 10-Year: 2.395% As you can see, 1-year debt trades at a higher yield than 2- and 3-year ...

In the words of CEO Elon Musk, the past few months have been “excruciating” for the luxury electric car manufacturer, Tesla. Shares have been down by over 35% since the beginning of the year, compared to the S&P 500, which has been down 10%. Tesla investors have been concerned about Tesla’s ability to compete with larger auto companies, the major question being whether or not Tesla could feasibly scale up their production. The company has been slow to roll out its new crossover SUV, the Model X and many analysts believe that low oil prices have made the electric car less appealing. Furthermore, the company has been burning cash at a...

Talking Points: – Signs of significant risk aversion increased again last night as Treasury yields dropped lower and stocks sold off. TheS&P has just set a fresh 21-month low. – Chair Yellen’s Congressional testimony continues today, and this could certainly prod volatility in either direction. Remain nimble on shorter-term strategies, and for longer-term strategies, manage that exposure. – We’re seeing major volatility in the Yen (covered in 2nd point below). Be really careful if trading anything with the Yen. Chair Yellen’s Congressional testimony yesterday was fairly neutral. She didn’t back off of rate h...
Some people are confused by what I mean when we say that rates will rise as we move into the sovereign debt crisis, which will pick up steam in 2017 moving into 2020. We are NOT talking about central banks raising rates; we are looking at the free market. As people realize that government debt comes with a risk, capital will begin to shift into the private assets. The market will not buy all the government debt that appears ready to explode. With central banks moving negative on short-term rates, smart money will wake up and flip into equities. If equities break-even, that is better than a guaranteed loss in government bonds. In Japan, the 1...

I have had more than a few folks ask me how I envision seeing this mess with our financial system eventually playing out. The truth is I am not quite sure because to my knowledge, we have never before seen anything quite like this in modern times. Generally, we have had economic slowdowns/recessions but during such times, there was more often somewhere around the globe where growth was not that bad. For instance, if the US was slowing, growth in Asia was strong. Perhaps Latin America was growing while the Eurozone was slowing, etc. We do however seem to have entered a period in which it is difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a maj...
