We and many others have made a valiant effort over the years to explain what actually moves the gold market (as examples see our article “Misconceptions About Gold”, or Robert Blumen’s excellent essay “Misunderstanding Gold Demand”).Sometimes it is a bit frustrating when we realize it has probably all been for naught. Photo credit: Ajay Verma / Reuters This was brought home to us again in a recent missive posted at Kitco, which discusses an RBC research note on gold. In a way, it is actually quite funny. The post at Kitco is titled “Gold’s ‘One-legged’ Rally Is Cause of Concern”. We can assure you it is not of “concern...
Irreconcilable Positions Greece owes the Troika over €11 billion in bailout repayments through the end of July. Greece is unable make those payments unless the Troika releases the funds. Position 1: “We need a big debt restructuring, no more kicking the can,” says Greece’s Minister of State. Position 2: Germany offers a possibility of unspecified debt relief, at a future point in time, only if necessary. First, Greece must make another round of budget cuts on top of the pension cuts its just made. Greece has caved in every time, and in the most humiliating ways. Greece even caved in on pension cuts last week. Why should anyone believe...
According to a recently released Thomson Reuters report, China is the global leader of pharmaceutical innovation (see story). The country is successful, Thomson Reuters believes, because it has fostered a healthy mix of partnerships, pharma industry innovation and scientific research. The research is carried out at institutes and fosters collaboration between the government and industry. During 2015, five of the top ten global organizations for filing pharma patents were located in China. Over the period 2005-2015, three of the top ten organizations (including top spot) for publishing papers about drugs and disease were China institutes. WuX...

We evaluated 9 different companies this week to determine whether they are suitable for Defensive Investors, those unwilling to do substantial research, or Enterprising Investors, those who are willing to do such research. Out of those 9 companies, only 6 were found to be undervalued or fairly valued and suitable for either Defensive or Enterprising Investors. The Elite The following companies were found to be suitable for either the Defensive Investor or Enterprising I...
McDonald’s Corp (NYSE:MCD) has had an incredible time in the market over the past several months. However, what we’ve seen over the past few days has been concerning. After hitting a high of $131.60 on May 10, we’ve seen declines in the value of the stock, and those declines are starting to concern investors. However, I personally believe that McDonald’s has more room to grow. Today, we’ll talk about what we saw from McDonald’s months ago, what has changed since, why I believe the stock will climb from here, and how binary options traders can take advantage of the trends. What We Saw From McDonald’s J...
Over several days last week, I was invited to make several presentations to investors at the Las Vegas MoneyShow. I enjoy that my talks are well attended and that the investors in the room learn quite a lot when I discuss my cash flow focused stock analysis techniques. Because it is the core of my investing strategy and I write articles and newsletter sections on stocks that my strategy digs out, I sometimes forget that what I do is very different and new for a lot of investors. I also find that it is new and useful for even experienced stock market investors. Here are some of the basic guidelines that make of the core of my strategies that I...
Long before McKinsey released its 2015 report which showed that, contrary to repeated, erroneous analysis and propaganda media reports, not only has the world not deleveraged at all but has added some $60 trillion in debt since the crisis (a number which mostly thanks to China is about $5 trillion higher over the past year) we warned that the primary reason why the world is unable to grow is because of an unprecedented mountain of debt that keeps growing. In fact, since the growth – and monetization – of debt by central banks is the critical precondition to keeping asset prices artificially inflated, it was also the case that gl...

Pundits are all over the map on the future direction of the economy. Many are simply optimists (or pessimists) regurgitating baseless and emotional views. But even those with a good understanding of current macroeconomic data have differing views. Generally, macroeconomic pundits are wary of the current situation in the USA as economic growth is so near the zero line that any misreading of the tea leaves can draw very wrong conclusions. As an example, the NBER (which is tasked with identifying recessions) uses the big four identifiers: A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few...
