The continued contraction in import counts for April raises economic questions. Even exports were fairly weak. This data set is based on the Ports of LA and Long Beach which account for much (approximately 40%) of the container movement into and out of the United States – and these two ports report their data significantly earlier than other USA ports. Most of the manufactured goods move between countries in sea containers (except larger rolling items such as automobiles). This pulse point is an early indicator of the health of the economy. Consider that imports final sales are added to GDP usually several months after import –...
Introduction Xinyuan Real Estate (XIN) has been getting better press recently. For example, one scribe recently wrote: “ “After reporting 26.6% revenue growth in 2015, with growth accelerating in 2H15, the stage is set for accelerating revenue growth in 2016. Contract sales outpaced revenue growth for yet another year in 2015. The revenue-to-contract sales ratio has been approaching record lows, and will rebound as projects are completed. With contract sales also projected to grow another 10-15%, I expect another strong year of revenue growth.” The result of positive news has been an increase in its NYSE price from $3 to $5 in less tha...

The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is in the throes of a debt crisis that recently reached a breaking point when it missed a $422 million bond payment due May 2nd. When asked in a subsequent interview about the likelihood of making future payments on the remaining $72 billion of debt, Puerto Rican Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla noted that the U.S. territory “does not anticipate having the money.” Even a cursory review of Puerto Rico’s finances confirms Padilla’s claim of insolvency. The government is expecting deficits to grow from $14-$16 billion over the next five years, and for revenue to fall by $1.7 billion over that same fiv...
Volatility started off strong this morning, but through out the morning, it has been crushed falling from a high of 15.86 to as low as 14.69. All of this says is interesting for fodder, but what is more important is where it leaves us and that is in a tight trading range on VIX with a triangle that is pushing the action even tighter. So until something is broken to the upside or downside, you can expect a lot of pops and drops. Here’s my take on the VIX: ...
As we begin to wrap up the 2nd quarter of the year, I thought it was time to revisit the economy as the backdrop against expectations for stronger economic growth, rising inflationary pressures and an increase in interest rates and expectations. While there is currently a plethora of commentary strongly suggesting that the U.S. economy is nowhere near recession, it should be remembered the economy has NEVER been in a recession until future negative data revisions revealed it to be the case. Unfortunately, for investors, by the time a recession is widely recognized and accepted by the mainstream media and analysts, it will be far too late to ...

After last week’s key event, the retail sales number, which the market discounted as being too unrealistic (and overly seasonally adjusted) after printing at a 13 month high and attempting to refute the reality observed by countless retailers, this week has a quiet start today with no data of note due out of Europe and just Empire manufacturing (which moments ago missed badly) and the NAHB housing market index of note in the US session this morning. In Asia tomorrow the RBA meeting minutes may be of interest given the cut earlier this month, while Japan will also release industrial production data for May. In Europe we’ll get the Apri...
The Japanese government increased its rhetoric regarding the threat to intervene in the Japanese Yen’s appreciation, despite the looming G7 meeting this week. Earlier in the trading session, the Yen had been higher as uncertainty over disappointing Chinese economic data pushed the drive to safe havens. Japan’s Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Masatsugu Asakawa, reported that the G7 continues to discuss how disorderly currency movements should be dealt with, given that excessive volatility could have a negative impact on an economy. The Japanese government has been trying to gain support for its actions against a rising Yen. ...
Value mutual funds provide excellent choices for investors looking for bargains, i.e., stocks at a discount. Value mutual funds are those that invest in stocks trading at discounts to book value, and have low price-to-earnings ratio and high dividend yields. Value investing is always a popular strategy, and for a good reason. After all, who doesn’t want to find stocks that have low PEs, solid outlooks and decent dividends? However, not all value funds solely comprise companies that primarily use their earnings to pay dividends. Investors interested in choosing value funds for yield, should be sure to check the mutual fund yield. The mutual ...
