April 2016 Import Sea Container Count Continued Collapse Raises Recession Concerns
The continued contraction in import counts for April raises economic questions. Even exports were fairly weak. This data set is based on the Ports of LA and Long Beach which account for much (approximately 40%) of the container movement into and out of the United States – and these two ports report their data significantly earlier than other USA ports. Most of the manufactured goods move between countries in sea containers (except larger rolling items such as automobiles). This pulse point is an early indicator of the health of the economy. Why Puerto Rico Defaulted And Greece Did Not
The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is in the throes of a debt crisis that recently reached a breaking point when it missed a $422 million bond payment due May 2nd. When asked in a subsequent interview about the likelihood of making future payments on the remaining $72 billion of debt, Puerto Rican Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla noted that the U.S. territory “does not anticipate having the money.” Even a cursory review of Puerto Rico’s finances confirms Padilla’s claim of insolvency. Key US Macro Events In The Coming Week
After last week’s key event, the retail sales number, which the market discounted as being too unrealistic (and overly seasonally adjusted) after printing at a 13 month high and attempting to refute the reality observed by countless retailers, this week has a quiet start today with no data of note due out of Europe and just Empire manufacturing (which moments ago missed badly) and the NAHB housing market index of note in the US session this morning. Rhetoric Sends Yen Lower As G7 Looms
The Japanese government increased its rhetoric regarding the threat to intervene in the Japanese Yen’s appreciation, despite the looming G7 meeting this week. Earlier in the trading session, the Yen had been higher as uncertainty over disappointing Chinese economic data pushed the drive to safe havens. Japan’s Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Masatsugu Asakawa, reported that the G7 continues to discuss how disorderly currency movements should be dealt with, given that excessive volatility could have a negative impact on an economy.
