The TLT includes US Bonds maturing between 20 and 30 years. The TLT chart shows no fear of the US FED raising rates. It looks strong and higher prices should be expected in the months ahead. Higher prices means lower average bond yield or lower interest rates are expected. Simply the folks supporting the TLT price do not believe the FED is on a long term rate hike plan. But my greatest discovery was that a man must study ...
The combination of stronger US economic data and signals from the Federal Reserve that it is looking to continue the normalization process helped the dollar extended its recovery. The dollar posted a significant technical reversal against many of the major currencies on May 3. The Dollar Index rose for its third week, as the greenback climbed against all the major currencies but sterling (+0.9%). Sterling was aided by some polls indicating a shift toward the Remain camp. The referendum will be held a month from Monday. Also, April retail sales rose twice the median forecast, pointing to a good start to Q2 for consumption. Sterling’s adv...
Recently we noted a comment Jim Rickards made about the fact that lately there have been some elite economists who have written about the idea of a major upward revaluation for gold as part of an effort to get to the desired inflation targets of the central banks. In a new two-part article Jim explores this topic in depth. Below are the links to each article and a few selected quotes, followed by our own commentary. —————————————————————————————————...
USDCHF: With the pair closing higher the past week, we expect it to extend that recovery in the new week. On the downside, support lies at the 0.9800 level. A turn below here will open the door for more weakness towards the 0.9750 level and then the 0.9700 level. On the upside, resistance resides at the 0.9950 level where a break will clear the way for more strength to occur towards the 1.0000 level. Further out, resistance comes in at the 1.0050 level. Its weekly RSI is bullish and pointing higher suggesting further strength. All in all, USDCHF remains biased to the upside on price strength. ...
The Q1 earnings season is now effectively behind us, as the Retail sector earnings reports are mostly out now. With results from 480 S&P 500 already out and another 15 index reports reporting results this week, we will have seen Q1 results from 495 index members by the end of this week. Costco (COST – Analyst Report), Best Buy (BBY – Analyst Report) and AutoZone (AZO – Analyst Report) are this week’s notable earnings releases. The Q1 earnings season provided further confirmation of the all-around weak earnings picture. While an above average proportion of companies were able to beat consensus expectations, the growth ...
About a week ago, I wanted to watch something (out of the corner of my eye, as I often do during my trading day) that wasn’t Bob Ross or one of the movies I’ve seen a thousand times already. I fired up Netflix, and I decided to watch The Smartest Guys in the Room, the Enron story, whose trailer is here: I love documentaries, and I love learning about business scandals, but even though I already knew the Enron tale fairly well, watching this movie made me really mad. As long-time readers know, I’m a big fan of capitalism, and I’m absolutely all for entrepreneurs and innovators getting stinking rich. That’s just fine and dandy. Enjoy ...
Like war and making movies, trading is basically 99% boredom and 1% action. That’s what makes it so dangerous. We all know that we need to eat our vegetables. Drink eight water glasses per day and exercise regularly. Blah. Blah Blah. How many of us actually do even 50% of what we are supposed to? Life is not like Lake Wobegon where all the women are strong, all the men are handsome and all the children are above average. In real life we are all full of character flaws and the key to success isn’t to correct them through willpower but to intelligently manage them with minimum damage. Which of course brings me to trading. We are not perfect...

Written by Karen Shaw Petrou The FOMC minutes released on Wednesday focused on the top-billing question of a forthcoming interest-rate hike but also included a little-noticed discussion of the condition of U.S. financial regulation. The FOMC concluded not only that post-crisis financial regulation makes the system a lot safer, but also that the FRB may well need to use macroprudential tools that might not work. It might thus need to deploy monetary policy, but this too might not work or prove still more problematic if financial-stability objectives conflict with the central bank’s dual mandate. So, what to do? A new FedFin study concludes t...
Thursday’s -0.37% finish in the S&P 500 dropped the index fractionally into the red, down 0.19% year-to-date, but today’s 0.60% advance lifted it back into the green up 0.41% after 97 market days in 2016. The index also closed the week up 0.28%, snapping a three-week losing streak. The Dow, on the other hand, despite its 0.38% advance today, extended its weekly losing streak to four weeks. With six trading days remaining in the proverbial “sell in May”, the S&P 500 is down only 0.63% for the month. The yield on the 10-year note closed at 1.85%, unchanged from the previous close but up 14 basis points from last ...
