Taking most investors by surprise, minutes from the Fed April meeting pointed to interest rate hike possibilities in June. While this seemed unfeasible a few days back, a volley of upbeat economic data lately sparked off possibilities for further policy tightening. Also, plenty of positive vibes were felt in the market, including a healing labor market and the latest uptick in global sentiments buoyed by stabilization in China and oil. All these opened the door for a likely hike in June. Most Fed officials sought signs of economic improvement in the second quarter including a strong employment and inflation scenario. Inflation rose at the qu...
Deals and Financings Shanghai Fosun Pharma (SHA: 600196; HK: 2196) has submitted a non-binding bid to acquire India’s Gland Pharma, a contract manufacturer of injectible drugs (see story). Gland, which put itself up for sale, is valued somewhere in the $1-$1.5 billion range, and several pharmas/investment firms are interested. Three years ago, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts invested $191 million for a minority stake in Gland at a $600-$650 million valuation. A prolific deal-maker, Fosun has not previously shown interest in Indian pharmas. Ping An Haoyisheng (Ping An My Doctor), a health and medical mobile app started by China’s Pi...
Speculative positioning in the currency futures began to adjust before the latest signals from the Federal Reserve about the prospects for a summer hike and the widening of interest rate differentials. In the CFTC reporting week ending May 17, the day before the FOMC minutes were released speculators mostly reduced gross long currency positions and added to gross short positions. There were a few exceptions. Speculators added less than 500 contracts to the gross long euro position (to 101.7k). They added 9.1k contracts to the gross long Mexican peso position (to 25.2k). Speculators also trimmed the gross short yen position by 2.6k co...
Goldman Sachs came out this week and stated it saw little upside for the overall market during the next 12 months. This confirms the same view I have articulated on these pages since the back half of 2015. The overall market sells at a bit over historical valuations which would be fine if we were seeing decent growth both from an economic and earnings perspective. Unfortunately, that growth has not materialized at the present moment. Global demand sits at levels not seen since 2009, and both the European and Japanese central banks are experimenting with negative interest rate policies to ignite growth and with little result so far. Domestical...
There are a number of great companies in the market today. By using the ModernGraham Valuation Model, I’ve selected the ten most undervalued companies reviewed by ModernGraham. Each company has been determined to be suitable for the Enterprising Investor according to the ModernGraham approach. Defensive Investors are defined as investors who are not able or willing to do substantial research into individual investments, and therefore need to select only the companies that present the least amount of risk. Enterprising Investors, on the other hand, are able to do substantial research and can select companies that present a moderate (thou...

Identifying the intrinsic value of a cyclical stock is more difficult than valuing a company with a steady history of growing earnings. However, there are many Dividend Aristocrats and Dividend Champions that are, in fact, cyclical companies. In spite of this cyclicality, they have been able to steadily increase their dividends for over 25 consecutive years in order to make these prestigious dividend growth stock lists. Therefore, since growth of dividend income is important to the dividend growth investor (especially for those in retirement) it only makes sense to include certain cyclical stocks with long histories of growing their dividends ...
After the Fed tried to cause some more confusion with its decision to hike the interest rates by saying that a rate hike in June still is a possibility, we wanted to have a closer look at China which once again posted weaker than expected numbers. We are very interested in all developments in China, as the country remains one of the largest net buyers of our favorite metal, gold. Even though its economy is definitely growing at a (much) slower rate, the gold purchases haven’t been impacted, but the main question is whether these purchases are indeed to prepare the country for a total collapse of the financial system, or just to show the out...
The word for today is “orderly”. That word came up many times this week in a feud between the US and Japan at another useless G-7 meeting on global growth and competitive currency devaluations. As is typical, the finance ministers and central banks ended two-day meeting without making any policy agreements. The meeting was not a complete failure. It did provide entertainment value on the meaning of “orderly”. Please consider U.S., Japan Clash Over Yen Policy at G-7 Meeting. Group of Seven finance ministers and central bank chiefs ended a two-day meeting without an agreement on a more balanced policy mix, including additional, possibl...
Gold has been backing off with the prospect of rising interest rates, but a weekly closing below 1225 will signal that the high is possibly in place. However, a weekly closing below 1205 will signal that a serious decline is likely. Technically, we can see critical points at 12434.47 and 1202.13, and a closing below 1202 will signal serious trouble for gold. Gold needs to close above 1265 today to keep it alive near-term. Closing below that price level is neutral and a close below 1230 is bearish just from a tech perspective. A close beneath 1225 will warn of correction ahead. To answer all the questions coming in how the gold promoters ar...
