With the disclaimer being that as an intuitive and more artful TA using inter-market ratio measuring tools and the like, I am the furthest thing from an accomplished cycles analyst.Indeed, I am probably less adept at it than you are. That behind us, I was fooling around with Stockcharts.com’s cycles tool and came up with this monthly view of the S&P 500, with the thick black lines being a 30 month cycle and the thin green lines being a 12 month cycle, each starting from the 2000 market top. Each cycle has caught some pretty significant turning points with the 30 mo. having caught the 2000 and 2007 tops along with the 2002 bottom and the...
Every once in a while, I like to check in and see how these stocks are performing. For the most part, these names have held up quite well. In fact, all four names are within spitting distance of new all-time highs. Where did market players go during last Wednesday’s market surge? You guessed it: FANG. These companies tend to move markets more than we could ever imagine. Three of them are in the top 10 valuations (by market cap) in the US. Let’s take a look at each company, along with its monthly chart, to see how far these stocks have come since 2013. FANG stocks have plenty of bite Facebook (FB) has been a huge winner. In 2013, the stoc...
With Millennials piling in and Barrons bashing it, Snap Inc’s shares have plunged this morning after opening up over 4%. The stock is now down 14% from its spike highs on Friday and volume is heavy as spec longs cover into shorts’ T+3 ‘borrow’ availability tomorrow. As we noted previously the median age among Snap buyers on Thursday was even younger, at 26. (That happens to be the same age as Snap co-founder–and newly minted billionaire–Evan Spiegel.) Rebecca Shoenthal, a 22-year-old journalism student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was among them. She said she bought four shares of S...
With the failure to see the expected correction in our longer term forecast, this is probably a good time to review that forecast. A 15yr interval points to a top sometime in the period from September 2016 until the end of August 2017. We previously found that we can count both a sub-normal basic advance from the August 2015 low and a short basic advance from the February 2016 low and they both terminate within the 15yr interval. The sub-normal basic advance forecasts a high in the period from 3/31/17-10/18/17. The short basic advance forecasts a high in the period 5/15/17-8/11/17. Conclusion: We look for an important top in the period 3/31/1...
Last year, only 40 VC-backed US startups went public. This was the lowest number since 2009. The volatile public market at the beginning of the year forced several startups to delay their IPO plans. One of them was cyber security Billion Dollar Unicorn ForeScout. But it has recently filed confidentially for an IPO. ForeScout’s Offerings Campbell, California-based ForeScout was founded in 2000 by Israeli entrepreneurs Oded Comay, Doron Shikmoni, Hezy Yeshurun, and Dror Comay. It offers a unique platform that allows organizations to see devices, including non-traditional devices such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Bring Your Own...
Written by Alliance Bernstein Not long ago, we suggested that investors who wanted to make their equity portfolios less volatile add a dash of high-yield bonds. There’s a similar low-volatility strategy available to high-yield investors: shorten duration and focus on quality. As noted in a previous blog, high yield, when combined with equities, can reduce overall risk without sacrificing much return. This is partly because high-yield bonds provide a consistent stream of income that helps to offset stocks’ higher level of volatility. But what about limiting the volatility associated with high yield? In today’s uncertain environment, ...
The US dollar certainly received a boost from the growing prospects of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in March. What does this mean going forward: Here is their view, courtesy of eFXnews: In Friday’s speech, Fed Chair Janet Yellen confirmed that the Fed is set to hike rates at the upcoming meeting ending on 15 March, unless the jobs report for February due on Friday is extremely weak. We probably need to see jobs growth below 100,000, a higher unemployment rate and no improvement in the weak earnings data in January before the FOMC members change their minds. As we expect the jobs report for February to be good, we expect the Fed to de...

My last update on Oryzon Genomics (MADX: ORY) was in December 2016 after the company presented encouraging Phase 1/2a data at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting with ORY-1001. ORY-1001 is the company’s potent and highly selective Lysine Specific Demethylase 1 (LSD1) inhibitor under development for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The Phase 1/2a data presented at ASH demonstrate excellent safety and tolerability, along with initial signs of therapeutic effect in leukemia. The most pronounced effect was observed in patients with a specific FAB subtype of leukemia known as M6/AM...
Despite a positive headline print (+1.2% vs +1.05 expectations), January’s Factory Orders ex-transports rose just 0.3% month-over-month – the weakest growth since July 2016. The spike in new factory orders in December – on the heels of the Trump election victory and perhaps inventory stockpiling on hopes that everything will be awesome – did not last long and January saw growth tumble to just 0.3%… Transportation equipment new orders rose 6.2% MoM – bouncing back from a 4.3% plunge in December and a 14.7% collapse in November. Notice the trend? Yeah exactly – there is none! Two months down, ...
