Long time readers know that when markets do something unexpected – such as breaking a 3-day losing streak with a surge of 184 Dow points – I need to know why. And while I haven’t forgotten that I’m in the middle of a series on “how to outperform” when designing portfolios (with the next segment slated to cover the three primary ways one can add alpha), I believe yesterday’s sudden and rather surprising rebound in the stock market deserves our attention on this fine Tuesday morning. Given (a) the happenings in North Korea over the weekend, (b) the fact that the market’s 3-day decline left the S&P in a precarious position fr...
According to Gartner, web conferencing will be used for 15% of enterprise voice and video communications by 2019, up from less than 1% in 2016. The headlines say seasonally adjusted Industrial Production (IP) strongly improved, but headline manufacturing unexpectedly declined. Our view is similar to the headlines. Analyst Opinion of Industrial Production The market expected improvement this month in industrial production. Utilities were the wobble this month as it strongly improved whilst manufacturing surprisingly fell and mining insignificantly improved. This report is weak as utilities seem to only measure the weather and not the health of the economy. The manufacturing surveys all predicted improvement – and it was NOT delivered. As there was some backward revision in the l...
Having held on to hope that the reflationary impulse would sustain the adverse series of events and geopolitical shocks over the past two weeks, RBC’s head of cross-asset strategy Charlie McElligott is ready to throw in the towel, driven by what we have been pounding the table on for the past three months, namely the fading inflationary impulse out of China, manifesting itself most vividly in the recent crash in various commodities, and iron ore in particular, which has tumbled 30% from recent highs. In a note released on Tuesday morning, McElligott cautions that the market is “losing the [reflationary] impulse” and adds tha...
The Pound Sterling was higher across-the-board on Tuesday, and hit an 8-week peak versus the common currency Euro. Investors are jittery about the upcoming first round of voting in France’s presidential election, with the latest poll showing all four contenders in a statistical dead heat. Earlier polls had suggested that the first round of voting would result in a win for Marine Le Pen, running on an anti-EU/anti-immigrant platform, and centrist Emmanuel Macron. However, there has been a surge in interest for Jean-Luc Melenchon, the far left candidate, which has sparked concerns that the ultimate choices might be between a hard-right and a ...

As a factual backdrop for the ongoing arguments about whether or how much to raise the minimum wage, a useful starting point is the most recent version of the annual report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on “Characteristics of Minimum Wage Workers, 2016” (published April 2017). It begins: “In 2016, 79.9 million workers age 16 and older in the United States were paid at hourly rates, representing 58.7 percent of all wage and salary workers. Among those paid by the hour, 701,000 workers earned exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. About 1.5 million had wages below the federal minimum. Togethe...
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth raised his price target for Netflix (NFLX) shares to $178 from $175 following last night’s Q1 earnings report. The stock in premarket trading was down 25c to $147.00. While content timing can shift subscriber additions quarter by quarter, the underlying secular trend toward Internet TV “remains very strong,” Anmuth tells investors in a research note. Netflix’s weaker than expected subscriber additions in Q1 is partly a function of lighter content releases in the quarter, the analyst contends. Anmuth points out that the stronger than expected Q2 guidance leaves first half of 2017 global net ...
