Boring stuff from the market today – It was like the bulls and the bears were scared to do anything with the trading session. Where we opened the day at is pretty much where we closed the day. Nothing exciting at all. Today also demonstrated why it is still a very difficult market to short, and that is because of the entry prices. You get in after the the market opens, and then start shorting the market as it continues to drop during the morning part of the trading session, then you get squeezed in the afternoon when it decides to ramp in to the close. And while the bulls manage to rally in the afternoon, they aren’t doing any...

Over a long period of time, many studies have come to a similar conclusion: Small-cap stocks, screened in some manner for reasonable valuation, have been very strong performers. What Does Small-Cap Value Mean? “Value” is a term that is used in different ways in the financial industry. First of all, how do you define “value”? Low price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio? Low price-to-book value ratio? A low price relative to a mix of different fundamentals? Not to mention how the allocation should be divided among different-value stocks—should the company with the most “value” get the most weight or should the biggest company by mark...
Rogers Communications Inc. (NYSE:RCI) on Tuesday reported a sharp rise in first-quarter profit and higher revenue as it boasted a surprisingly large jump in new wireless customers. By BNN.ca Rogers, Canada’s largest cable, telecommunications and media company by market share, reported that: It added 60,000 net postpaid wireless subscribers in the quarter, much more than the 34,000 additions that analysts at RBC Capital Markets had expected saying its average wireless customer paid $59.96 a month for service, up from $58.54 a year ago. Its revenue rose 3% to $3.34 billion as wireless growth offset a fall in its media division and a ...
The textbook says that whenever the central bank raises its policy rate that means tightening. Actual experience over more than just this last lost decade demonstrates that at the very least it is much more complicated than that. There is far more evidence of monetary policy being nothing more than a response, as that reverse condition can absolutely be established by global monetary behavior time and again. Alan Greenspan “tightened” from June 2004 forward to no effect, and then Ben Bernanke “accommodated” in perfectly equivalent fashion from September 2007 forward, likewise to no effect. In the past month and three days we have ru...

Last week two of my favorite data points came out: Payrolls & Trade. Payrolls were a huge miss. Expectations were for 180,000+, but came in almost 50% lower (at 98,000). Automatic Data Processing (ADP) – a global leader in payroll processing – predicted 263,000. (This is a huge egg on their face. And it should tell you to be wary of mainstream “experts.”) Trade data was also bad. The background to trade data has been that U.S. fracking reduced oil imports and boosted exports. That also trickled into oil derivative products like plastics and chemicals. But when oil prices plunged, the value of all these plunged with it. When...
