The Shanghai Composite Index, notorious for its wild swings over the past two years, has gone 85 trading days without a loss of more than 1% on a closing basis, the longest stretch since the market’s infancy in 1992. The last 4 days have highlighted the unusual effect in Chinese stocks.. each time the Shanghai Composite dropped over 1% (red dotted line) it was miraculously lifted to ensure it closed with a loss less than 1%… As Bloomberg reports, authorities favor a steady stock market because it helps companies fund investment and repay debt by issuing new shares, which could help boost economic growth, according to Yin Ming,...

AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) and its partner Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ENTA) received exceedingly good news about new Phase III data on their hep C combo for glecaprevir/pibrentasvir. BUT since these drugs first went into combo clinical trials, the market has peaked and begun a painful retreat as the top players scramble to stay competitive. Written by John Carroll (ENDpts.com) The data were absolutely stellar. Fully 99% of genotype 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 patients — in 145 of 146 patients — saw their virus disappear after 12 weeks of treatment. They did that without ribavirin and without turning away a likely group of resistant patients. N...
For the third consecutive month real average weekly earnings fell year-over-year. In March, at least, with the CPI starting its downward leg the decline was by the smallest amount; essentially flat but fractionally less than zero. It was the first time real wages have fallen three in a row since early 2012. The six-month average is just about zero, too, unsurprisingly also the lowest since mid-2012. Despite the unemployment rate falling well-below 5%, there isn’t the first sign of wage acceleration in nominal terms. That has left real wages to the whims of oil prices, first as their biggest boost in years as oil prices, like early 2009, col...
The French elections have just become more complicated with the shooting in Paris. What are the risks of this event on EUR/USD? Here is an opinion from Bank of America Merrill Lynch: Here is their view, courtesy of eFXnews: Bank of America Merrill Lynch FX Strategy Research notes that heading into the French elections, markets are still underpricing the risk, although almost anything is possible based on the the latest polls. In particular, BofAML outlines 2 negative outcomes for markets: 1- The worst outcome for markets, according to BofAML, is if Le Pen and Melenchon are in the 2nd round, as markets could start pricing Frexi...
Commodities made little headway over the past trading day. Crude oil prices continued to fall but momentum noticeably slowed from the previous day’s breakneck selloff. Whispers of preliminary agreement on extending the OPEC-led supply cut deal failed to impress after Saudi Arabia Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said the scheme failed to reach its inventory reduction goal, at least so far. From here, a meeting of the OPEC technical committee charged with monitoring the production cut program and weekly Baker Hughes US rig count data are in focus. Taken together, they may help establish if the cartel appears to have the wherewithal t...
The session on Thursday features Manufacturing PMI numbers coming from both the European Union and the German economies, so it seems very likely that the markets will be tilted towards earlier trading than anything else. DAX German markets had a slightly positive session on Wednesday, but still look a bit weak. We need to hold on to the €12,000 level to continue the uptrend, so at this point in time one would have to think that a lot of traders are on the sidelines. A break above the highs from the session would be bullish though, and more than likely sing call buyers into the market immediately. GBP/USD The British pound rallied slightly d...
This purchase shouldn’t surprise too many of you. Often times, Lanny will find a great dividend growth stock on a discount and sell me on the fact that the company is a buy. Well, this time was definitely one of those instances and I followed his lead in purchasing shares in this dividend growth stock. Time to see why I purchased shares in CVS Health Corp (CVS). Perfectly timed picture for this post. The day I made the purchase, I happened to be driving past my local CVS store. What are the odds? Last week, I added 13.8123 shares of CVS with a cost basis of $1,075. The trade was made using the automatic trade feature on Capital O...
“I realized that becoming a master of karate was not about learning 4,000 moves but about doing just a handful of moves 4,000 times.” — Chet Holmes Stocks held support areas and are moving up. We’re not breaking out, just consolidating in most cases, so more time is needed but things are holding and shaping up for more strength in the weeks to come. I’m on a bike trip and working along the way and trying to keep a bigger picture view since I’m not at my desk all day. I like it this way much better! SPY is right up against the downtrend line now so let’s see if we can best it. Moving above it is positive and I’ll have to be lo...
Continuing with the Wild West theme, “Buffalo Bill” Cody staged the period with “border dramas.” Buffalo Bill’s fame as a westerner gave his shows star appeal and an aura of authenticity. The market has had its own border drama this week. The sentiment has fluctuated between fear that the talk of strengthening fundamentals are just a show and faith that the fundamentals have an aura of authenticity. The Russell 2000, of the four indices a reliable measure of consumer sentiment, began the week looking like the warning phase would accelerate. By the end of Thursday’s session, IWM returned to an unconfirmed Bullish Phase. The losers ...
