The US investigation into steel imports is not particularly novel. The US steel industry is highly organized for such purposes. The steel sector has the significant global excess capacity, which makes for intense competition. What is relatively new about the investigation is that it is being conducted Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, claiming that the steel imports are a threat to national security. It has only been used 14 times in its 55-year history. It has not been used since 2001 when George W Bush launched a year-long investigation into iron ore and steel, and ultimately took no action under Section 232. When the ann...
Gold investors were forewarned. Gold bulls were shaken by the results of first round voting in France over the weekend. Bullion prices sank as much as 1.5 percent as the euro spiked two cents higher against the US dollar. While the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen, advanced to the second round, her centrist opponent, Emmanuel Macron, is more likely to ultimately ascend to the presidency. Macron is pro-EU; Le Pen is not. French voting wouldn’t have affected gold unless the market was primed for a fall. There were signs of wobbling in the days leading up to the vote. First of all, a large net short position held by commercial producers and ...
Homebuyers are rushing into the market as the spring selling season heats up. Existing home sales jumped 4.4% from February to an adjusted annual rate of 5.71 million in March–their strongest pace in a decade. This was much better than the economists’ estimate of a 2.2% gain to 5.6 million. Sales were particularly strong in the Northeast and the Midwest regions. “Bolstered by strong consumer confidence and underlying demand, home sales are up convincingly from a year ago nationally and in all four major regions despite the fact that buying a home has gotten more expensive over the past year,” according to the National Associ...
Over the last three years, investors put in $823 billion into Vanguard funds and scooped up around 8.5 times of all its peers. By any measure, these are astounding figures with the company witnessing the best quarterly inflow in the first three months of the year. Vanguard’s asset under management skyrocketed in the last seven years, with its cheaper index funds outperforming the more expensive mutual funds that rely on smart portfolio managers to pick stocks. With Vanguard growing by leaps and bounds, we suggest funds that recorded the highest returns in the first quarter and are worth a bet. Vanguard Attracts $121 Billion in Q1 Vanguard d...
EUR/AUD Daily Technical Outlook: EUR/AUD gaped into a key resistance confluence on Sunday at 1.4430– this region is defined by the 100% extension of the February advance & the upper median-line parallel. Although our broader outlook remains weighted to the topside, the immediate advance is at risk near-term while below this threshold. Interim support rests at the 1.43-handle with our broader bullish invalidation down at 1.4167. A breach higher from here targets subsequent topside objectives into the sliding parallel extending off the March highs / 1.4595. EUR/AUD 240min Notes:A closer look at price action highlights near...
from the Atlanta Fed — this post authored by John Robertson In the aftermath of the Great Recession, labor force attachment declined. However, that pattern has been reversing itself lately. In particular, the labor force participation rate (LFPR) of the prime-age (25 to 54 years old) population, the core segment of the workforce, has been moving higher since late 2015. While this is good news, the prime-age LFPR remains well below prerecession levels, meaning that there are more than two million fewer prime-age people participating in the labor force. What factors have contributed to that decline? Where did those people go? The Atlanta ...
TM editors’ note: This article discusses a penny stock and/or microcap. Such stocks are easily manipulated; do your own careful due diligence. In another universe far far away Rokmaster Resources had a gold/copper project in Peru. The market blew up, they blew up but they came back to life in November of 2016 when they did a deal on the Duncan Lake zinc property in southeast BC. My article was pretty accurate but it described a successful management team picking up a nice project in Peru. And other than me getting a bottom call dead wrong, it talked about a company that has totally changed in 3.5 years. Rokmaster is probably correct...
The nice move up in US markets is not impressing Doc. Along with the big move down in the VIX we think there could be an opportunity to go long the VIX but again shorting these markets has been tough. We also look at the gold move down and the fact that the PMs remain in large trading ranges since the low in December of 2015. (Audio length 00:10:54)...
Shares of Sally Beauty Holdings (SBH), a provider of beauty supplies, dropped in morning trading after the stock was downgraded by an analyst at KeyBanc, who has concerns over management’s operational plans. ANALYST DOWNGRADE: KeyBanc analyst Jason Gere cut his rating on Sally Beauty to Sector Weight from Overweight, calling the company’s retail story “hairy” despite its efforts. In a note to clients, Gere said he has lower confidence in the company’s top-line outlook amid difficulties in the retail environment as well as slower growth on the professional side of the business. Gere said that Sally Beauty’s ...
