Value is arguably the leading exhibit in the factor zoo. Quantifying the value factor is challenging, however, for multi-asset class portfolios for at least two reasons. Commodities aren’t easily valued because oil, gold, etc. don’t generate earnings or dividends. Even when there are cash flows to measure, putting a broad set of assets on a level playing field is difficult, perhaps impossible, if we use traditional valuation metrics, such as book value, price-earnings ratio, etc. Measuring valuation for real estate investment trusts (REITs), for instance, requires a different procedure vs. stocks, which is different from bonds. A solution...
Headline CPI Back To Target The latest CPI data for Australia showed that inflation rose 0.5% QoQ over Q1, boosted mainly by higher food and fuel costs. Underlying inflation also increased slightly, with trimmed mean inflation increasing 0.5% QoQ also though weighted media inflation remained flat at 0.4% QoQ. The majority of the increase in prices was driven by higher fuel costs and administered price changes for medical services. Volatile components such as vegetable prices also rose sharply fuelled by adverse weather conditions. On a YoY basis, headline inflation rose to 2.1% in Q1 from 1.5% in Q4 2016 marking the first +2% reading since 20...
The oil trade has become tedious with a bigger dose of monotonous heaped inside. Not even another conflict with Iran or a drawdown in oil inventory could wake this boring market up out of its tedious movements. Perhaps that may change as the dollar is springing back to life and we get oil inventories and reports that Mexico’s PEMEX is going to spend 134 million dollars on a great oil hedge. Along with that, traders may look at other outside commodity markets that are showing some signs of stress. The API did report an 897,000 barrel drop in crude oil supply and an even larger 1.97 million barrel drop in Cushing, Oklahoma. Of course some of ...
Consumer Reports is lowering the ratings of two Tesla vehicles because the automaker has not enabled the new models with the automatic emergency braking safety feature it said would come as standard. The maker of electric vehicles continues to say it is working through software problems, but that has left owners without the promised feature, some for as long as six months. The previous Model S and Model X came with functioning AEB as standard. Models produced between late October 2016 and now do not. In a statement to Consumer Reports, Tesla says it expects the software update to come Thursday. The Tesla Model S loses two points in the rating...
Beachhead Capital Management has published a white paper on what it calls the “second generation of liquid alternatives.” To begin at the beginning, “liquid alternatives” are investment products, available to retail investors, for example through mutual funds or ETFs, which are designed to provide the diversification and absolute-return benefits typically associated with hedge fund strategies. Liquid alts offer these strategies far beyond the bounds of the limited class of qualified investors who can avail themselves directly of the hedge funds. The first generation came into existence in the wake of the global financial crisis. But g...

Based upon projections for 2017, it would appear as if the global bond markets have once again surpassed expectations. Indeed, following the U.S. election and the subsequent rate hike by the Federal Reserve (Fed) in December, the “student body right” mentality among investors was that the fixed income asset class could have its share of difficulties in 2017. While it is certainly early (and as we have seen in the past, developments can change over the course of a full year), the first three months of this year have been a welcome surprise for fixed income investors. The emerging market (EM) debt space had experienced the best perfor...
