Emerging market (EM) ETFs have had a great run this year (as of June 29, 2017) with iShares MSCI Emerging Markets (EEM – Free Report) returning over 18%. The segment is doing well on improving global economic fundamentals and accommodative developed market central banks that are still keeping interest rates low and driving investors toward the relatively high-yielding EM bloc. Some of other reasons for this outperformance were a subdued greenback, commodity market strength and policy easing in several EM economies that facilitated growth. In fact, though EMs used to underperform in a rising rate environment in the U.S., the bloc has...

Nasdaq has issued a market-wide trading halt amid what appears to be a “glitch” that sent a number of the largest Nasdaq-listed stocks to crash or spike to exactly $123.47 per share. This move crashed the value of companies including Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL), sparked chaos in Microsoft (MSFT), while sending Zynga (ZNGA) rocketing up more than 3000%. On the eve of the US Independence Day holiday and in after-hours trading, The FT reports that market data show that companies such as Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, eBay and Zynga were repriced at $123.47. The Bloomberg data terminal listed either “market wide circuit breaker...
Last weekend, I was talking to a buddy who started a new business. I asked him how it was going. “Sales are going great. But I have a cash flow problem. I have to turn away orders,” he said, shaking his head. He explained that he can’t fulfill orders until he gets paid on older ones that have 30-day terms. And if his customers are late paying the bills, he’s really stuck. Let’s say my friend has $1,000 in cash in the bank. On July 1, he gets an order that will cost him $1,000 to fill. He spends the $1,000, charges his customer $2,000 and is paid on August 1. Also on August 1, he gets an order for another $1,000 worth of product ($2,...
After news that the greenback suffered its worst quarterly performance in more than seven years, the US Dollar managed to recover lost ground. But that recovery was only with the assistance of a rise in yields on US Treasury instruments to a 7-week high. Indications that the European Central Bank was on the verge of pulling back its massive liquidity injection had helped push the EUR/USD to its highest level in more than year. As reported at 10:52 am (BST) in London, the EUR/USD was trading at $1.1375, down 0.45%; the pair earlier hit a session trough of $1.13728 while the peak was at $1.14297. The USD/JPY was trading at 112.882 yen, a gain o...
Government law agencies place gag orders on technology companies in general and social media companies in particular. Facebook said it wants to notify three users about the search warrants seeking their communications and information and also give those users an op...
Well, the Nasdaq closed red in Monday’s holiday-shortened session, trailing the S&P which was green and also the Dow, which hit a record, much to the delight of Donald Trump… grabbin’ the Dow by the pussy! — Walter White (@heisenbergrpt) July 3, 2017 The divergent fortunes of the Nasdaq and the S&P/Dow marks a reversal of the YTD trend, which has seen tech stocks outperform notably. The weakness we saw in the Nasdaq 100 during June has some observers worried given that a handful of techy names have been responsible for a disproportionate share of benchmark gains. In a Friday post documenting tech’s recent trials and t...
Some refreshingly strong data released in both Japan and China has helped market move on a note. We saw the BOJ’s TANKAN (business confidence data) show an improvement from previous quarterly number at +17 (prior was +15). This has helped push the Nikkei a little better but sees the JPY trade weaker now with a 113 handle. In China PMI also better than expected helping the renewed confidence provided recently by the addition to the Emerging Markets Index. Additionally, a system (Bond Connect) is being trialled soon that will allow Hong Kong investors to participate in mainland FI markets. There is a concern being talked between dealers that ...

Each time the price action triggers the alternate wave count, W...
