President Mario Draghi and Co. appear to be embracing a less-dovish outlook for monetary policy as officials note the positive developments coming out of the euro-area ‘had to be reflected in the Governing Council’s communication by dropping the reference to the expectation of further rate cuts in its forward guidance on policy rates.’ As the ECB finally puts a floor on interest rates, it ...
Video Length: 00:06:58 It’s time for our mid-year update to our 2017 Global Market Outlook. And the short story is that we’re not changing many of our views from our annual outlook. We still believe in buying dips and selling rallies against a backdrop of an expensive U.S. equity market. We see an earnings outlook that looks broadly neutral. And we see overall sentiment indicators that point to complacency. We believe Europe is in a better position within its market cycle and, to a lesser extent, feel the same about Japan and emerging markets. We think government bonds are expensive, but a lack of global inflation pressure should keep yie...
Geopolitics has taken centre stage today as Trump comments on the severity required towards North Korea and prepares for his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has talks with President Trump are expected to be frosty as she commented, “He is the most disruptive and egotistical leader at the (G20) summit”. G20 takes place in Hamburg Germany, over the next few days and the disruption is expected to grab the front pages away from the main headlines. On the eve of all of this stocks in Asia took a bit of a wobble forcing the Nikkei lower (-0.45%) but with only limited impact on the JPY. We eventuall...
The Chart of the Day is a repeat and belongs to the Maui Land and Pineapple Company (MLP). I found the multi-faceted real estate stock that owns over 23,000 acres on Maui by using Barchart to sort today’s Top Stocks to Own list first by Weighted Alpha, then by technical buy signals of 80% or more. Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 1/23 the stock gained 195.24%. Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, develops, sells, and manages residential, resort, commercial, agricultural, and industrial real estate properties in the United States. US imports rose year-over-year for the seventh straight month, but like factory orders and other economic statistics, there is a growing sense that the rebound will not go further. The total import of goods was up 9.3% in May 2017 as compared to May 2016, but growth rates have over the past five months remained constrained to around that same level. It continues to be about half the rate we should expect given the preceding contraction. Though price effects are tailing off, there was again a large base effect distortion from crude oil. US imports were up significantly again in May, by 41.8%, meaning that imports ex petroleum rose by just 4....
For reasons that will become clear, I think it’s time to put a few Shekels into Suncor, which has been a spectacularly successful oil sands company. 1. The first chart shows that, if you had bought shares 30 years ago, you would have paid a couple of bucks per share, and made off like a bandit. Prices did crash during the Great Recession of 2008-9, but even since that short-term catastrophe the company has done pretty well. Until you look at the short term, anyway. 2. The one-year chart, however, suggests that the company is on the mend.I’ve drawn a fancy “M” chart around recent market action, with the red and green support/resistance...
As the Pakistan election date nears, the Pakistan Stock Exchange shows its worst June performance in nearly two decades. A report about stock index manipulation suggests that the elections in Pakistan may have a negative impact on stock returns. Nearly a year after Pakistan was proclaimed the top-performing market in Asia with a staggering 46% return, political events in the country have cast a shadow over the landmark Pakistan Stock Exchange success. OpenClipart-Vectors / Pixabay About a year ahead of the Pakistan election date, which is in the summer of 2018, the Pakistan Stock Exchange continues to struggle due to political events, with t...
A dozen countries out of the 28 European Union (EU) members had legal limits on cash transactions in place at the end of 2015. Portugal, the country leading with these limits, had an EUR 1,000 legal limit on all cash transactions. Additionally, the discussion about introducing more of these limits is ongoing in almost all EU member states and recently, a new European Commission initiative seeking to introduce a compulsory EU-wide limit appeared. Cash helps to mitigate risks that will not disappear in a postmodern society. The European Central Bank even phased out the production of the 500 euro note and Australia started seriously considerin...
Note: We’ve updated the charts below based on monthly data through June. Here’s an interesting set of charts that will especially resonate with those of us who follow economic and market cycles. Imagine that five years ago you invested $10,000 in the S&P 500. How much would it be worth today, with dividends reinvested but adjusted for inflation? The purchasing power of your investment has increased to $19,240 for an annualized real return of 13.16%. Had we posed the same question in March 2009, the answer would have been a depressing $6,654. The -8.12% real return would have cut the purchasing power of your initial investment...
