No doubt, elements of the current market condition can make one uneasy. Like driving a hotrod going 100 mph without a seatbelt on, getting long up at these levels can feel death defying. Just look at the brick and mortar retail sector (XRT). For us, the idea of mall shopping died when we moved from New York to New Mexico. (Sorry New Mexico). The malls here have more geriartic mall lappers than shoppers. Yet, I thought our state the exception not the rule. Nevertheless, massive chain store closings have dominated the retail news. Amazon and online shopping dominate. Where have all those laid off gone for work? Clearly not reflected in last Fri...

As a welcomed gift for the Independence Day holiday, Lipper Fund Data and Analytics just released June performance data for the entire universe of mutual funds available to domestic investors. Topping the U.S. Diversified Equity category were small-cap value funds which gained 3.1 percent in June versus the broad category’s 1.2 percent appreciation. That’s pretty good outperformance. Small-cap value funds did better than the category, too, in the one-year period ending June 30, rising 21.5 percent versus a 17.6 percent increase for the Diversified Equity group. But here’s the interesting part: small-cap value significantly underperforme...
