A finite planet cannot sustain infinite economic growth. Modern society is addicted to and engineered for perpetual economic growth. Now, a fourth-grader can tell you that nothing can grow forever, especially if you have finite resources. But that simple realization is eluding today’s central planners, despite multiplying evidence that growth is becoming harder and harder to come by. This week’s podcast guest is Professor Tim Jackson, sustainability advisor for the UK government, professor of sustainable development at the University of Surrey and Director of CUSP. Tim is also a full member of the Club of Rome. He explains why the...
Chinese producer prices accelerated in September 2017, while consumer price increases slowed. The National Bureau of Statistics reported this weekend that China’s PPI was up 6.9% year-over-year, a quicker pace than the 6.3% estimated for August and a 5.5% rate in July. Earlier in the year producer prices were driven mostly by 2016’s oil rebound, along with those in the rest of the global economy, but in recent months there has been more influence from other industrial metals like copper and iron. Where the Chinese PPI is being boosted by these market shifts, consumer prices are not. It suggests the same disparity between those raw market ...
The effect of prime minister Narendra Modi has been intense in the economy and the stock world, leading to heavy gains for the major bourses since last Diwali. The BSE Sensex has gained more than 15% while the National Stock Exchange index (Nifty) has fetched higher returns of nearly 17%. Will the bullish trend continue heading into the Hindu New Year celebrated as Diwali or the Festival of Lights given demonetization and the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that has slowed down economic activity this year? The combination of both factors have compelled both International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to slash GDP growth ...
It’s time again for our weekly gasoline update based on data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The price of Regular and Premium are down six cents each from last week. According to GasBuddy.com, Hawaii has the highest average price for Regular at $3.07 and Santa Barbara, CA is the most expensive city, averaging $3.20. Arkansas has the cheapest at $2.19. The WTIC end of day spot price closed at 51.87, a 1.8% increase from this time last week. How far are we from the interim high prices of 2011 and the all-time highs of 2008? Here’s a visual answer. The next chart is a monthly chart overlay of West Texas Light Crude...
Video length: 00:09:01 Funds continued to shuffle capital around the market leaving the indices mostly unchanged. In tonight’s video we look at the record low volatility and the bets traders are placing on it. Also, we look at one area of the market old school traders say to watch…...
Terraform Power (TERP) shares plummeted to $11.50 today after Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) announced that the “stock” merger election option was oversubscribed. This was not at all unexpected (I predicted as much last week), nor does the stock decline indicate any uncertainty about Terraform’s future under Brookfield’s control. The reason the stock fell was because the only TERP shares that can currently trade are shares for which the owners failed to make an election (choosing cash or stock) in the acquisition. Because the “stock” election is oversubscribed, anyone buying TERP shares on the market today will not have a st...
The failure of the 15-year interval high (counted from the 9/21/01 low) to appear on time does not mean the bulls are out of the woods yet. A 12-year interval is sufficient to pull the Dow down into its forecast low without the help of a 15-year interval. A 12-year interval forecasts a low in a time period extending from 12yrs, 2mo to 12yrs, 8mo. from a significant high. The 12-year interval counted from point B of the long cycle on 3/7/05 is active until approximately 11/7/17. Once the correction is complete we expect the Dow to move to new highs and finish the secular bull market at point J in the period stretching from Dec’17 to Sept...
Eric Lonergan has been cranking out some good stuff on money and language in the last few weeks which got me thinking again about “moneyness” and the network effect of a money system. I wrote a piece on Moneyness back in 2012 that I think describes a realistic operational scale of the utility of money. In short, we use the most credible form of money that has the most utility accessing the payment system. Now, this concept is rather different from most academic views where money is viewed more like a hierarchy. In a hierarchical sense government money is usually the highest in utility and everything else is “credit” built on top of...
There was an obvious bear raid in the precious metals today. We are nearing peak fraud, at least for this latest iteration of bubbles and busts. A good man can speak truths most profoundly with his silences. A wicked man tells lies with his. A sin against the Spirit will not be forgiven. What is a sin against the Spirit? What is Truth?Pilate asked that question of Truth itself as truth stood in silence, and then turned and washed his hands of it. And so he condemned not the man, but himself, with his silence, while the Man redeemed the whole world, with his. ...
