In the latest sign that U.S. manufacturing is in fine fettle, the New York Federal Reserve’s Empire State manufacturing index hit its highest level in three years during the month of October. A raft of recently released data also serves to indicate that the manufacturing sector has performed particularly well this year. The reasons for the boom in the sector are not hard to seek. The Trump administration’s pro-business approach along with an improvement in key economies across the world has created a positive atmosphere for the industry. This is why it makes great sense to invest in manufacturing stocks, especially because these stocks ha...
Following earlier reports that Canada and Mexico would push back on and “firmly reject” Trump’s Nafta demands, moments ago the Mexican Peso surged by 1.5%, the most in 4 months, after Nafta negotiators announced they had successfully completed the 4th round of talks and agreed to extend negotiations past the year-end deadline. The optimism came despite US trade rep Lighthizer’s charge that Mexico and Canada have refused to improve the Nafta text. Note: This commentary has been updated to incorporate the September data for Industrial Production. Official recession calls are the responsibility of the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee, which is understandably vague about the specific indicators on which they base their decisions. This committee statement is about as close as they get to identifying their method. There is, however, a general belief that there are four big indicators that the committee weighs heavily in their cycle identification process. They are: Nonfarm Employment Industrial Production Real Retail Sales Real Personal Income (excluding Transfer Receipts) The Latest...
In April 2007 the approximate size of the Fed’s balance sheet was $800 billion, meaning that over the last decade it ballooned by 5X to $4.4 trillion. This was supposed to “stimulate” the main street economy, but once again today we got some “in-coming data” that said essentially nuts to that. We are referring to the monthly industrial production index for September that the near-sighted financial press greeted as a modest but welcome rebound (o.3%) from last month’s hurricanes which came, well, in hurricane season. Actually, we saw something considerably more salient. To wit, the overall index came...
Industrial Production rose 1.6% year-over-year in September 2017. That’s up from 1.2% growth in August, both months perhaps affected to some degree by hurricanes. The lack of growth and momentum, however, clearly predated the storms. The seasonally-adjusted index for IP peaked in April 2017, and has been lower ever since. This pattern, the disappointment this year is one we see replicated nearly everywhere on both sides (supply as well as demand) of the global economic equation. To further emphasize the non-weather nature of recent weakness, the Federal Reserve revised lower estimates for both July and August. The initial index value produc...
Natural gas prices continue to be predominantly driven by weather, which we saw again today as afternoon weather model guidance heavily reversed prices. We have seen weather models seem to drive price action within a broad range the last two days as prices have attempted (and failed) to break out both upwards and downwards. This comes as we have been watching to see if cold arriving in the medium-range will have much staying power into the long-range. Our Afternoon discussion yesterday to clients highlighted why we saw prices likely remaining within a general range from $2.88/$2.92-$3.02 today, which they did as they bounced off $3.02 resista...
NAFTA negotiators said they “successfully completed” Round 4 of their discussions… adding that talks will be extended past the end-2107 deadline (odd definition of success?).
