“Since 1970, every time asset values have risen above 520% of households disposable income (the dashed line in the chart) then the US has been in a bubble and a subsequent crash has followed. This has simply meant asset values growing much faster than households income or households capability to sustain those price increases. The depth of each crash has been relative to the overshoot of asset values on the upside.” Chris Hamilton, Bubble-nomics It seems as though when I procrastinate long enough someone eventually does a very good job of making a point for something that is important, and does it in a way that I may not have been...
Yesterday Gold Resources (GORO) released 3Q 2017 production figures. These figures once again confirm the fact that GORO is a base metals producer and not, as many think, a precious metals producer: The chart shows that in 3Q 2017 base metals’ (copper, lead and zinc) contribution to the total production was 56%. What is more, the high contribution of base metals should have a very positive impact on the company’s results. To remind my readers, this year base metals go up much stronger than gold and silver so…GORO investors should be satisfied. The chart below depicts the value of metals produced, assuming the average qua...

There was little change on the day-to-day machinations of the market. The S&P is riding along upper channel resistance with technicals still bullish. The Nasdaq is caught in a halfway house with bullish technicals and a relative advantage of the index against the S&P. The Russell 2000 is working off a MACD trigger ‘sell’ with a relative loss against the Nasdaq but watch how the index reacts when it tests the 20-day MA. Finally, the Dow Jones Index made it to channel resistance. For tomorrow, look for a reaction at channel resistance in the S&P and Dow Jones Index. For everything else, keep with the established tr...

Although M&A is a frequent occurrence in the biotech sector, major M&A is normally less common for large cap stocks. In the case of Shire PLC (ADR) (NASDAQ: SHPG), a $46 billion market cap pharma company, major M&A could be a potential outcome due to activist activity. According to Sky News, famous activist fund Sachem Head Capital Management has urged Shire’s board to consider spinning-off or selling various assets. Sachem disclosed this summer that it had taken a small stake in Shire. While Sachem doesn’t exactly have a commanding share of Shire’s float, it does have a reputation of activism and a past string of suc...
Value and Momentum Investing — our two favorite factors. We talk about these phenomena on our blog all the time, and have given both rational (1) and behavioral explanations as to why these may occur. (Here is a hot off the press working paper that attempts the “rational” route). However, only a handful of investors in the finance community directly invest in stocks with value and/or momentum characteristics — the individual stocks (or bonds) themselves. Instead, many use ETFs or mutual funds to gain access to these factors. Institutions generally do the same, either investing in hedge funds or managed accounts. This is delega...
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Housing Market Index (HMI) is a gauge of builder opinion on the relative level of current and future single-family home sales. It is a diffusion index, which means that a reading above 50 indicates a favorable outlook on home sales; below 50 indicates a negative outlook. The latest reading of 68, up 4 from last month’s number, came in above the Investing.com forecast of 64. Here is the opening of this morning’s monthly report: “This month’s report shows that home builders are rebounding from the initial shock of the hurricanes,” said NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald, a home b...
