Video Length: 00:10:03 The US Dollar continues to take its cues from the other major currencies as light calendars on Wednesday and Thursday have ceded the spotlight to developments in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. While the DXY Index is trading lower still on Thursday after giving up all of its early gains on Wednesday, the greenback is not the focal point for much of the movement in FX markets thus far today. The commodity currencies were all trading higher earlier following the release of Q3’17 Chinese GDP data, which showed stronger growth than economists were expecting, and thus, implying demand for base metals and energy c...
Video Length: 00:04:15 Earnings season kicks into high gear this week with over 190 companies reporting, including many big-cap Dow and S&P 500 names. But who has the best earnings track record out of those names? It’s not easy to beat nearly every quarter in a row for years but these companies have managed to do that. Additionally, the shares, on many of them, have been breaking out to new highs. Will another beat push the shares up even higher? This Week’s Amazing Earnings Charts 1. Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM – Free Report) has missed just once in the last 5 years. Like a lot of the semis, shares are at 5-year highs. W...

Those who do not wish to draw any parallels between today’s stock market and the 1999-2000 tech stock bubble typically claim that “All of those turn-of-the-century dot-coms weren’t making any money. Today’s 2017 superstars — Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX) and Google/Alphabet (GOOG) — make money hand over fist!” The problem with this rationalization is threefold. First, the 1999-2000 tech balloon was not an online-only phenomenon. The ‘Four Horsemen’ that controlled more than half of the market capitalization for the ill-fated Nasdaq — Microsoft (MSFT), Intel (INTC), Cisco (CSCO) and Dell — were exceptiona...
This week is the 30-year anniversary of the 1987 crash. Can you believe it? Appropriately or ominously (depending on your view), the market continues its eight-year march up the charts. Nowadays, it’s setting records with each new high it hits. Are investors nervous? Should they be? This bull market is old by historical standards. At 102 months, only the 115-month bull market of the 1990s lasted longer post-WWII. If that doesn’t make one a tad nervous, the stock market has been undergoing a shocking under-the-radar reduction: from 7,500 publicly listed companies in the 1990s all the way down to fewer than 4,100 today. I could go on. It’...
Michael Lebowitz and I have produced a number of charts that have generated a lot of questions, comments, and shares over the last year. We decided that each quarter we will begin producing a “chart book” of the “most important charts” from the last quarter for you to review. We have provided the links in most cases back to the original articles as well for further clarification and context if needed. We hope you find them useful and insightful. Time To Breakeven While individuals are inundated with a plethora of opinions on why the index is moving up or down from one day to the next, a portfolio of dollars invested in the market ...
EUR/USD The EUR/USD pair initially fell during the day on Wednesday but found enough support to turn around and form a hammer. The hammer sits just below the 1.18 level, and a break above that level not only breaks the hammer from the Wednesday session, but it breaks above the hammer from the Tuesday session as well. I think at that point we go looking towards the 1.19 level, and then eventually the 1.20 handle above. Longer-term, I still expect to see this market break towards the 1.25 handle, but I’m also cognizant of the 1.17 level below being massive support. If we were to break down below there, you could make an argument for head and ...
A rising number of investors are anxious about the “bull market in everything”, but the markets are calm, based on rolling 90-day volatility (standard deviation). It may be the calm before the storm, although research on volatility clustering suggests that the tranquil times can roll on for longer than expected. The tide will turn eventually, of course, and perhaps soon, but the rear-view mirror at the moment shows that the landscape is unusually serene across the board for the major asset classes in recent history, based on a set of exchange-traded products via rolling 90-day standard deviation of one-day percentage returns.
