WTI/RBOB bounced today in anticipation of a reversal of the last two week’s builds in crude inventories, and bulls were not disappointed by the API print. Jan ’18 WTI pushed above $57 but RBOB fell after a big crude draw (though gasoline build). “It looks like we are going to get a draw in crude oil inventories. That’s somewhat supportive,” John Kilduff, a partner at Again Capital LLC, a New York-based hedge fund, said by phone. Investors are also “looking ahead to the OPEC meeting, and despite some of that dithering by Russia, the consensus is they are going to come together and extend the output cuts.” Additionally...
Asia followed the strong US sentiment encouraged by better than expected data. Much of the moves however, can also be explained by increasing capital flow away from troubled areas. Mondays flow was forced after news that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel failed to form a government suggesting new elections. With the Euro losing ground we did see only a small move into the Yen but saw returned demand for Asian equities. The Hang Seng returned almost 2% in todays trading, with Shanghai adding +0.6%. Both indices traded well all day but it was the Hang Seng that steadied all day closing at the days high. Very little fresh news out in Asia but ...

On October 11, 2007, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a new high of 14,198.10 in intraday trading. At the time, it would have been impossible to know, but such a peak wouldn’t again be matched until 2013, almost six years later. Investors were in for a roller coaster, and a slow and unpredictable recovery – how would their portfolios fare? INVESTING AT THE MARKET PEAK Hypothetically, let’s say that you bought $1,000 of shares in some of America’s best-known companies, right during these pre-crisis highs in October 2007. Today’s chart from HowMuch.net shows how you would have fared based on share price alone, not including the ...
My model of interest rates and currencies says that long-term yields are just an amalgam of future short-term yields with a term premium tacked on. There’s nothing in there about money flow and people moving money to where yields are highest. I think this matters when thinking about what the flattening yield curve signals as central banks begin to tighten globally. The reason I mention this is that I have heard some chatter that goes a bit like this: “It used to be that flattening yield curves were a sign of bad things to come in the real economy. But in today’s central bank-manipulated world, you can’t really know if that’s true. O...
Thanksgiving Day (Nov 23) that marks the beginning of the month-long holiday season is just a few days away. Most Americans wait for the fourth Thursday of November every year to begin shopping for the festive season. Hence, higher consumer consumption boosts the overall economy, which is reflected in the movement of the stock market. Per CNBC, since 1945, the S&P 500 has risen 75% during the Thanksgiving week with an average gain of 0.6%. Consumer Confidence Up Consumer Confidence — a key determinant of the economy’s health — reached its highest level in almost 17 years. Per the Conference Board data, the Consumer Confidence Inde...
I don’t know who gets the credit for saying: “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” (Yogi Berra, Mark Twain or Ernest Hemingway seem like good random guesses…) But that just might be the new mission statement for a $250 billion swath of U.S. companies that appear ready to become America’s first “stealth” pot stocks. After all, these firms tried everything else to get their “growth mojo” back, with… New packaging schemes. New ad agencies. More brands. Lower prices. For U.S. beer companies, nothing’s worked. Could a pivot into pot help? We’re about to find out. Potential Pot Investments Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE:...
The headline existing home sales growth improved with the authors saying “While the housing market gained a little more momentum last month, sales are still below year ago levels because low inventory is limiting choices for prospective buyers and keeping price growth elevated.”. Our analysis of the unadjusted data agrees with the headline data. Analyst Opinion of Existing Home Sales The rolling averages have been slowing in 2017 – but they marginally accelerated this month. Still the rolling averages remain in contraction. Econintersect Analysis Unadjusted sales rate of growth accelerated 7.9 % month-over-month, up 2.9 % y...
Achieving a level playing field is sometimes all in the eye of the beholder. It involves the ability to value actual assets following a wave of serious corruption revelations. All of these involve putting a price on trades once oil moves into the wider market. It all started a month ago when, on the same day, two revelations hit, both centering on continuing legal challenges in trading exchange transactions. Both connect to oil and may prove to be merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to oil trading scandals. Here’s how these scandals will affect your energy investments… The Forex “Cartel” The first revelation came in a Brooklyn...
