Shares of Blue Apron (APRN) got a boost in morning trading after shares were upgraded by an analyst at Barclays, highlighting the promotion of Brad Dickerson to the meal-kit delivery company’s chief executive officer as a positive. The upgrade comes after shares were downgraded last week at RBC Capital, which cited the management change as implying less visibility into the company’s fundamentals. ‘STABILIZATION POINT’: Barclays analyst Ross Sandler this morning upgraded Blue Apron to Equal Weight from Underweight and raised his price target for shares to $4 from $3. In a note to clients, Sandler said the meal-kit deliv...
US Census says manufacturing new orders marginally declined. Out analysis agrees – but the rolling averages were unchanged. Analyst Opinion of Census Manufacturing Sales According to the seasonally adjusted data, it was civilian aircraft / ships and boats that caused the decline. The data in this series is noisy so I would rely on the unadjusted 3 month rolling averages which were unchanged this month. Remember the headline numbers are not inflation adjusted.. Backlog of orders continues in expansion year-over-year – but just barely. And this data is not inflation adjusted which mean backlog is likely contracting. US Census Headli...
EC President Jean-Claude Juncker said that it is impossible to reach a deal today. However, big progress has been made and negotiations will continue. He is still optimistic about getting an agreement before the EU Summit on December 14-15th. Also UK PM May says that more consultation is needed. The pound dropped sharply and then bounced. However, the 1.35 has been lost even after the recovery. Any delay implies a risk for total failure, even if significant progress was truly made. A deal between London and Dublin on a “regulatory alignment” between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland triggered angry responses in the UK, especi...
The price of bitcoin topped $10K last week. It then broke above $11K only to crash some $3000 before rising once again. On the way, some of the exchanges were overwhelmed and their websites crashed. The interest in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies goes well beyond the chatter and the high prices. Brokers are offering cryptos and new initiatives are popping up. Here are 10 interesting reports that show the huge interest. CME will offer Bitcoin futures from December 18th. This will allow going short on the cryptocurrency but also makes it a lot more mainstream as a fully-fledged asset class. FXPIG CEO Kevin Murcko Launches Cryptocurre...

The British Pound remains bid coming into the first full week of December, and GBP/USD may continue to exhibit a bullish behavior over the coming days as the U.K. and European Union (EU) inch towards a Brexit agreement. Market participants are likely to pay close attention to the headlines coming out of the U.K. as Prime Minister Theresa May meets with EU officials and is scheduled to appear in front of the House of Commons for questions later this week. Progress towards the next phase of negotiations may keep Sterling afloat as it curbs the risk for a ‘hard Brexit,’ and the pound-dollar exchange rate may continue to gain ground ahe...

AUDUSD broke above the top trend line of the price channel on the 4-hour chart, suggesting that lengthier consolidation for the downtrend from 0.7897 is underway. Range trading between 0.7532 and 0.7644 would likely be seen in a couple of days. As long as 0.7644 resistance holds, the downtrend could be expected to resume, and another fall towards 0.7450 is still possible after the consolidation. Near-term support is at 0.7532, a breakdown below this level could signal resumption of the downtrend. On the upside, a breakout of 0.7644 resistance will suggest that the downtrend had completed at 0.7532 already, then next target would be at 0.7729....
(from my colleague Dr. Win Thin) EM FX ended the week on a mixed note. US jobs data may refocus market attention on Fed tightening. Most EM inflation readings this week are expected to show easing price pressures, supporting a dovish EM central bank outlook. The major exceptions are Mexico and Turkey, whose central banks may be forced to tighten policy in the coming weeks. Indonesia reports November CPI Monday, which is expected to rise 3.4% y/y vs. 3.6% in October. If so, it would still be below the 4% target and in the bottom half of the 3-5% target range. Next policy meeting is December 14, no change is expected. Turkey reports November...
Investors following the growth or value strategy are always on the lookout for stocks that are poised to see strong growth and are available at a discount. Growth at a reasonable price or GARP investing is a strategy that takes care of these criteria. The GARP approach prefers stocks that are priced below the market or any reasonable target determined by fundamental analysis. These stocks also have solid prospects in terms of cash flow, revenues, earnings per share (EPS) and so on. However, one should not confuse GARP investing with the blend strategy. While the blend strategy promotes investment in both value and growth stocks, GARP investin...
