Indian share markets continued to trade on a weak note during the noon session. Losses were largely seen in PSU stocks, metal stocks and energy stocks. The BSE Sensex is trading lower by 150 points and the NSE Nifty is trading down by 62 points. Meanwhile, the BSE Mid Cap index is trading up by 0.1% & the BSE Small Cap index is down by 0.1%. The rupee is trading at 64.96 to the US$. The Market cap to GDP ratio for Indian companies is close to dangerously high levels. While this is still some way off the peak of FY-08, when it had once reached close to 150, it’s relatively high. The Warren Buffett Indicator Suggests I...
March Madness might reasonably describe the bullish rationales that predominate market behavior currently; aside any day (of course) we get an ‘actual’ S&P decline like Tuesday’s projected likely faltering morning rally; and then failing midday recovery effort. Even now they’ll say just another dip; and ignore possibilities the market is running out of fuel, as well as encountering turbulence as our text and videos discussed likely. They’ll reference the extended value levels or concentrated gains led by ‘only’ a small portion of leading stocks as irrelevant; rather than point to a dearth of br...
For the end-of-bond-bull-market-crowd, 3% is a line in the sand. There is no inherent significance in that number, except that it’s a round one. The benchmark 10s as of now trade with regard to that level as if it’s a ceiling. That’s what makes it so momentous. In 2013, the yield finally broke 3% the day after Christmas, getting as high as 3.04% on New Year’s Eve. It hung around there until January 8, 2014, before finally declining back below 3% and remaining less to this day. Back in 2010, though, 3% was meaningless. At that time, the level to beat was 4%, which the 10s did exactly once that year on April 5. The difference between 20...
Production of advanced biofuels made from algae could grow rapidly in the late 2020s, according to Synthetic Genomics, the biotech company that has formed a partnership with ExxonMobil (XOM) to develop the fuel. The two companies said last week that by 2025 they were aiming to set up one or more demonstration plants to produce 10,000 barrels a day of diesel and jet fuel from genetically modified algae. Synthetic Genomics argues that scaling up production could be relatively quick. The aim is to produce biofuels that will be cost competitive with conventional oil-based fuels at crude prices of about $60 to $65 a barrel. Exxon started working w...
The Q Ratio is a popular method of estimating the fair value of the stock market developed by Nobel Laureate James Tobin. It’s a fairly simple concept, but laborious to calculate. The Q Ratio is the total price of the market divided by the replacement cost of all its companies. Fortunately, the government does the work of accumulating the data for the calculation. The numbers are supplied in the Federal Reserve Z.1 Financial Accounts of the United Statesof the United States, which is released quarterly. Extrapolating Q The ratio subsequent to the latest Fed data (through 2017 Q4) is based on a subjective process that factors in the mon...
We have a key belief about saving for retirement: The potential for additional upside is not worth an outsized risk of devastating downside. Case in point: The recent Reuters Special Report on the riskiness of Fidelity Investments’ target date series Freedom Funds highlights important issues on the risk faced by participants in target date funds—risks that may become painfully apparent if or when equity markets pause or reverse their nearly decade-long climb. The challenge with the Fidelity glide path isn’t so much that they are suggesting a bad portfolio—after all, 60/40 is common enough to be the punchline for most any asset alloc...

John Rubino joins me today to continue our discussions on tariffs and the bigger picture of trade wars. The recent tariffs with Canada and Mexico are just the start of what could be a busy year for analysts both from the markets side and political side. Free trade can be positive for many countries and people but it is never that easy. (Audio length 00:13:48)...

Natural gas prices were relatively stable today, eventually settling up modestly on a day where they traded positive through most of the trading session. The theme of small trading ranges continued, with just a 3.5-cent trading range again today. This pulled the daily trading range far below what we tend to see this time of year. The natural gas strip settled with relatively similar gains along the strip, though backs rallied into the settle so they ended up leading. In our Afternoon Update we looked at recent intraday spread action as well to determine risk and a market narrative, as we have seen spreads be especially telling as of late....
